DE = Historisches Rathaus
The Old Town Hall, with its unmistakable architecture and 60-metre-high tower, has dominated the cityscape ever since it was completed in 1915. After an extensive renovation project which ended in 2012, the historic landmark looks better than ever. Guided tours offer insights into the design and history of the building.
DE = Stadthafen an der Ruhrpromenade
The city harbour is now a recreational spot with a waterside resting place for hikers. Set alongside it, the bustling Ruhr Promenade offers a number of restaurants with riverside dining and fine views of the Old Town Hall, reminiscent of a classic Italian palazzo.
DE = Kunstmuseum in der Alten Post
The Old Main Post Office is now an acclaimed art museum, with Expressionist and Classical Modernist works among the highlights. The Ziegler Collection Foundation has been a chief contributor since 1981, and regularly-changing exhibitions showcase the best art both from the city and from across the region.
DE = Historische Altstadt
Narrow alleyways, half-timbered houses and quaint restaurants: Mülheim's Old Town really does boast a special charm. The Protestant St. Peter's Church and the Catholic Church of St. Mary's Birth can both be admired from the top of the nearby Church Hill, the historical heart of the city and home to the Tersteegenhaus.
DE = Altstadtfriedhof
The Old Town Cemetery is one of the most beautiful urban parks in the city. A stroll through this peaceful oasis will take you past the gravestones and tombs of some of the most famous Mülheim families, among them the business dynasties of Thyssen and Stinnes. Right by the cemetery is the Mülheim Open-Air Stage, a popular cultural meeting place.
DE = Wasserbahnhof
Located on the Schleuseninsel, and easily reached by bike or on foot, the Water Station is the boarding point for the Mülheim White Fleet which offers regular cruises through the picturesque Ruhr Valley to Essen-Kettwig as well as day trips to various destinations. The building itself was constructed over 90 years ago in the shape of a ship's bow.
DE = Haus Ruhrnatur
This museum, which is run by the regional water provider RWW, celebrates the rich flora and fauna found in and along the River Ruhr. Adventure-based exhibitions also focus on climate action and renewable energies. The museum hosts a range of exciting activities and there’s also a small café situated directly on the river.
DE = Schloß Broich
Built during the later period of the Carolingian aristocratic dynasty, this monument dates from the years 883/84 and is unique in the German-speaking world. Originally built to prevent the Normans from advancing up the Ruhr, today the castle courtyard serves as a unique venue for weddings and other events.
Top Tip: The history museum is also well worth a visit!
DE = Camera Obscura
Situated in the MüGa Park, the world's largest walk-in camera obscura offers fantastic 360-degree views of the surrounding area – weather permitting! There’s also a fascinating museum displaying a range of other optical phenomena and telling the history of film.
Top Tip: The MüGa Park with its large meadow is a great place to relax!
DE = Stadthalle Mülheim an der Ruhr
Situated directly on the banks of the Ruhr, the neoclassical Stadthalle was built in 1926 and its eye-catching design continues to amaze to this day. The inside is just as impressive, with the historical interiors helping make the Municipal Hall an award-winning events venue.

DE = Weiße Flotte
You’re sure to get that holiday feeling on board the White Fleet, whether it's on a scheduled tourist trip or a themed day cruise like a Schlager-Party, Ruhrort in Flames or a Chill-Out-Party, where dancing down the river is the order of the day.
Classics such as the Ruhr Valley Cruise, the Bergische Coffee Cruise and a range of other culinary excursions can also be enjoyed throughout the season.
DE = Aquarius Wassermuseum
This multimedia museum is a key stopping point along the Industrial Culture Route. Housed in the historic Styrum Water Tower, here everything revolves around the theme of water, with more than 30 permanent exhibits and stunning panoramic views from the top. In the immediate vicinity is the romantic Styrum Castle, nowadays used for weddings and other celebrations.
DE = Flughafen Essen/Mülheim
Essen/Mülheim Airport was officially recognized as an approved emergency landing site back in 1925. Located on the border between the cities of Essen and Mülheim and with a paved runway 1.553 m long, the airport serves as a base for private sightseeing flights over the Ruhr region
DE = Siedlung Mausegatt
Built between 1899 and 1911 by Hugo Stinnes and August Thyssen for the workers of the nearby Wiesche Colliery, the Mausegatt Estate is now back to its best thanks the efforts of its residents. Well-kept brick houses lend the streets a unique charm and make them perfect for exploring the region’s industrial past
DE = Leder- und Gerbermuseum
The tannery – and subsequently the leather trade – are closely linked to the history of the city. The development of leather production and the story of Mülheim's leather industry are told here across around 350 square metres of exhibition space. There’s a small shop and the museum also hosts regular bag-making workshops.
DE = Freilichtbühne
From May to September, a colourful cultural programme attracts a diverse range of guests to this open-air stage. Whether it’s music, theatre or cabaret, the popular Mülheim arts spot offers the chance to while away the hours surrounded by greenery. Local company Regler Produktion organise the shows according to the principle of pulling "culture out of a hat!”.
DE = Theater an der Ruhr
This celebrated institution was founded in 1980 as a new type of ensemble theatre. Its varied programme emphasises international exchange and cooperation, which has led to guest performances in more than 50 countries. The headquarters in Raffelbergpark is a venue for contemporary theatre and art. Directly opposite is the Raffelberg racecourse and a golf course.
